Garage Additions
If you need more room in your house, adding a garage may be worth considering. Garages are often thought of as boxes for cars and mowers, but a well-designed garage can actually serve many important household functions.
Once you consider all of the benefits a garage addition can provide, you might be ready to start planning for the addition. Here are just some of the reasons you might want a new garage:
- Additional storage
- Sheltering and maintaining your car or boat
- Workshop
- Playroom
- New living space
- Home office or studio
In both cold and hot climates, detached garages make getting from the house to the car, and back again, without having to face inclement weather a big reason to make the addition.
Detached garages offer a lot more design options. Benefits to consider include:
- A detached garage can more easily reduce or even eliminate the garage-dominated facade that some find unattractive.
- A detached garage can be set at an angle to the house, or set back from the house.
- With no garage attached to the house, think of what you could do with that space. You might consider adding a patio or herbal garden in this area.
- If you live in a moderate climate, you might actually enjoy a nicely landscaped walk from the car to the house.
- If you have a small house, adding an attached garage can overwhelm it. A detached garage can be a much more aesthetically pleasing option.
- It can be easier to add living space above a detached garage than an attached garage.
